The Bay Fish and Chips
Once an iron-age fishing village, Stonehaven on Scotland’s east coast is now home to The Bay Fish & Chips, a restaurant that stays true to its heritage. Opened in August 2006, the shop has won numerous accolades for its use of local suppliers and its contributions to community projects and local fishing charities. With over 30 years in the industry combined, co-owners Calum and Lindsay boast a veritable glut of awards for their outstanding service to the industry. These include both the 'UK’s Number One Independent Takeaway' and 'UK Good Catch' winner at the National Fish and Chip Awards in 2013, UK Young Fish Frier of the Year 2002-2004 and Runner Up (to HRH The Prince of Wales) in the 2degrees Champions Awards 2014. With their particular emphasis on environmental concerns, The Bay insist on using compostable packaging, chemical-free cleaning systems, sustainable and traceable fish, all without exception. Calum has worked with chefs such as Phil Vickery and Nick Nairn to create recipes and run cook shops while other celebrity fans include Welsh designer Jeff Banks (pictured below!).
Victoria and Calum met in 2013 at the Hankyu British Fair in Osaka, Japan. Impressed by each others' business and ethics, Calum commissioned Victoria to produce a bespoke design for The Bay Fish & Chips apron. Asked to explain what made Victoria keen to take on the project, she had the following words of praise:
"Calum is such an ambassador for environmental issues and sustainability, along with being a huge character whom I admire. I knew from the start that this would be an interesting and fun project to work on".
Victoria has created two designs for Calum, one in 2014 and one in 2018. The first design took inspiration from the traditional newspaper wrapping of a fish and chip supper to create a front page full of headlines about The Bay, incorporating the brand colour yellow. After The Bay underwent a rebrand Victoria created a new design which includes the shop and surrounding area along with a drawing of their very own fish and chips and includes their new branding. The designs are available exclusively on aprons, printed onto 100% unbleached organic cotton using environmentally friendly inks, all handmade in Britain.
